How to Use a Coffee Rinse For Hair

Natural Coffee Hair Rinse for BrunettesOur cup of morning coffee is just the thing to energize our day. But, did you know that coffee may also be good for your hair?

Although there very little scientific research supporting the use of coffee on hair, there are numerous anecdotal claims that tout the hair care benefits of a strong coffee hair rinse.

  • The rinse softens, adds shine, and brings out the highlights in your hair.
  • The caffeine helps to increase circulation and stimulate the hair follicles to encourage growth.
  • The rich antioxidants in coffee may help repair damage and prevent breakage.
  • A Coffee rinse can prevent hair loss.
  • A coffee rinse can color gray hair.

Coffee drinkers are well aware of the stains that result from an accidental spill of their favorite cup of Java. Here is one time when the staining qualities of coffee are desirable.

I tried a triple strength brewed coffee rinse on my greying hair a few times. Unfortunately it remained the same grey-brown color. That being said, many people say it works, everyone’s hair is different and perhaps my hair was not porous enough to accept the color.

As a dye, coffee seems to be more beneficial as a color enhancer or booster for those whose natural brown shades are similar to the coffee color. It may also add subtle highlights depending on your hair color. As a natural alternative to dye, a coffee rinse is definitely worth a try. If you have light hair do a strand test in order to evaluate any change in color.

I did discover that the effect of the coffee rinse on my hair was quite amazing! The rinse improved the appearance and texture of my hair which had more body, bounce and shine.

Since coffee contains caffeine and flavonoids, which are antioxidants, some evidence has shown that a coffee rinse smooths the hair shaft resulting in hair that is softer with less frizzies and tangles.

  4. Wash and condition your hair as normal.

  5. While your hair is still wet, spray or apply the brewed coffee to your hair, making sure to saturate your strands.

  6. Massage the coffee into your hair and scalp for a few minutes.

  7. Allow the rinse to sit on your hair and scalp for about 10 - 20 minutes while you complete your shower. You may cover your hair with a shower cap.

  8. After 20 minutes, rinse the coffee from your hair with cold or lukewarm water and then pat dry.

If you have a very porous tile or surfaces in your shower or sink, be careful of the coffee stains.

Notes On Coffee Rinses

  • The exact amount of coffee to use depends on the length and thickness of your hair, but 2-4 cups are usually recommended.

  • Do not use instant coffee since it may contain additives that can damage your hair.

  • Be sure the coffee is not hot. Since your scalp is much more sensitive to temperature than your hands, if the coffee feels hot to your finger, it will feel even hotter on your head.

  • Do not use on very light or bleached hair since coffee will stain porous or light hair.

  • Coffee can also stain your towels and other equipment.
