Product Overview

Washing your face with oil may sound like the perfect recipe for acne, but natural, organic plant-based oils can be an incredibly effective cleansing agent for any skin type--dry, sensitive, oily, and even acne-prone skin.

For years commercial skincare companies have told us we need to remove the oil from our skin, especially our faces. The problem is that this basically strips the skin of its natural defenses and dries out your facial skin which stimulates increased oil production--which is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

The oil cleansing method is a gentle way to care for the skin naturally. The physical properties of oil gently dissolve and pull away dirt, grime, excess oil, and impurities, then leave the skin softly moisturized.

Our facial cleansing oil is formulated with a blend of organic oils and herbal infused oils that will help balance sebum production and remove makeup as it moisturizes, protects, nourishes, and helps promote soft, smooth, and clear skin. It's an everyday luxury that your beautiful face deserves!

  • Gently removes makeup, dirt, and impurities leaving skin feeling clean and balanced
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Sunflower and Jojoba replenish essential vitamins, fatty acids, and lipids
  • Castor oil lifts impurities
  • Baobab helps moisturize and soothe dry skin and helps combat early signs of aging by reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • An infusion of helichrysum and carrot root helps heal dry skin, heal scarring, and calm inflammation
  • Softens, soothes, moisturizes, and hydrates skin for a radiant complexion

For the perfect cleansing pair, use our Organic Facial Cleansing Oil with our GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certified Cotton Face Cloths.

How To Use

How To Use A Facial Cleansing Oil

While cleansing oils are great for removing makeup, they are also fabulous for those who do not wear makeup.

Even a makeup-free face gets dirty at the end of the day. The oils act to loosen the dirt from the pores so the water can wash it away.

There is no need to pre-clean your face even if you are wearing makeup.

Always start with dry hands and a dry face. If you wet your hands or face it counteracts the "like dissolves like" (oil dissolves oil) concept. The goal is to allow the oil to blend with the natural oils, dirt, and makeup on your face. Since water and oil do not mix, adding water will interfere with the process and prevent the product from effectively cleaning the dirt and oils off your skin.

Natural-Cleansing-Face-Oil

  • Apply about ½ teaspoon of cleansing oil to your face. Avoid your eye area.

  • Using your fingers massage firmly, but gently, using small upward circular motions on your dry skin. The gentle massaging action warms the skin, which encourages the pores to open. This allows the cleansing oil to soften, loosen and dissolve makeup, dirt, dead skin, and impurities on your face.

  • After a minute or so of massaging allow the oil to remain on your skin to help deep clean pores while you soak a small soft cotton face cloth or washcloth in very warm water.

  • *Squeeze out most of the excess water apply the cloth to your whole face and hold it there as a compress for about 10-15 seconds.Natural-Facial-Cleansing-Oil-Method The warm wet towel will help soften your skin, open your pores, and aid in the removal of dirt, grime, and excess oils.

*Note: At this point, some like to use wet fingers to massage the face before applying the wet cloth. As you massage with the water the oil will turn a milky white as the oil and water emulsify. If needed wet your hands again with a little more water and massage again.

  • Using the corners of the warm wet face cloth slowly begin to gently wipe off the cleansing oil using small upward circular motions (be sure to have enough water on the cloth to help emulsify the cleansing oil).

  • Rinse the cloth, and repeat until the oil and dirt are wiped off your skin.Organic-Facial-Cleansing-Oil If you are removing a lot of makeup do NOT scrub your face, just rinse the cloth and repeat the process several times or do a double cleanse (see below).

  • Unlike facial oil, which is a moisturizing step in your routine, you do not want a layer of oil left on your skin.
  • Finish with a warm water splash and pat dry with a clean towel.

Double Cleanse: If you wear a lot of makeup, have very oily skin, used too much cleansing oil, or simply like a cleaner feel, wash your face with mild soap and a soft washcloth after your cleansing oil.

To remove lipstick and eye makeup, including mascara, put a couple of drops of oil on a cotton cloth, pad or swab and swipe over the lips and eye area. This is a gentle eye makeup remover, but take care not to get it in your eyes.

Organic-Makeup-Remover

A facial cleansing oil will dissolve away the dirty oil and makeup from your face and replenish it with clean, nourishing oils.

Adjustment Period:

Depending on the condition of your skin, your skin may go through an “adjustment period” during which you may even see more oily skin or more breakouts as impurities leave the skin. It may take a week or two for your skin to adjust to a new regimen. Please resist the urge to use harsh facial cleansers during this time, as it will make the adjustment period take longer.

Some of you may already have your own routine for removing makeup. If it works for you -- simply substitute our organic cleansing oil for your makeup remover.

How Does a Facial Cleansing Oil Work?

How Does a Facial Cleansing Oil Work?

Natural Organic Facial Cleansing Oil Makeup RemoverA cleansing oil works its magic in two simple ways . . .

  • oil dissolves oil
  • skin with balanced oil production is happy skin

1. The concept of the oil cleansing method is rooted in one of the most basic principles of chemistry, “like dissolves like.”

Since water does not dissolve oil, if you wash with water you need some sort of soap or detergent. Think of soap as the middle-man that helps bring oil and water together so that the dirt and grease on your skin can be easily rinsed away.

Oils are what chemists call lipophilic, meaning that they are naturally attracted to other oils, including the excess skin oil (sebum) that causes breakouts and the oil by-products found in most makeup.

Even if you use water-based makeup, throughout the course of a day the makeup will mix with your natural facial oil.

A facial cleansing oil will dissolve away the dirty oil and makeup from your face and replenish it with clean, nourishing oil that protects and moisturizes throughout the day.

2. Using some good, natural, organic oil on your skin actually slows down its own oil production to maintain balance.

There is a huge misconception that using any oil on your face only creates more oil, more breakouts and leaves an oily residue. For years commercial skin care companies have told us we need to remove the oil from our skin, especially our faces.

The problem is that drying out your facial skin actually stimulates increase oil production--which is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

Our facial cleansing oil is formulated with a blend of organic oils and herbal infused oils that will balance sebum production and bind with the existing oil to unclog pores and cleanse impurities.

Using pure, organic oils whether to cleanse or simply moisturize will help balance sebum (natural skin oil) production, protect skin and keep it soft, smooth, and hydrated.

Why Should I put OIL on my face?

Whether you call them "face oils" or "facial serums," nourishing, unrefined organic oils can moisturize, soothe and help restore natural balance to facial skin.

Our skin naturally loses the ability to retain moisture as we age. Our facial skin tends to become thinner and lose its elasticity. Our skin also produces less oil, which means it dries out more easily. This can exaggerate the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Facial oils can help prevent water loss and keep skin plump.

Organic Face Oil Facial SerumApplication Hint: Apply facial oil right after washing skin and right before any other moisturizer to hold the water on the skin and seal in moisture.

While many people, especially those with oily or acne-prone skin tend to shy away from oil-based moisturizing, it can be a very important step in daily skin care. An organic facial oil helps to increase the moisture content in the skin and prevent further moisture loss.

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, nourishing organic oils can help mimic the natural skin sebum which in turn sends signals to oil-producing cells that say, "Hey my skin is moisturized so stop producing oil."

Using products created to "dry out" oily skin, in an attempt to get rid of oily shine, will actually trigger the oil glands to increase oil production, which only exacerbates the oily skin problem. A wholesome moisturizer helps balance skin oil production.

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin an organic facial oil made from unrefined botanical oils creates a protective but breathable barrier that slows moisture evaporation and thus helps lock in moisture.

Irritated Skin

A natural face oil is ideal for sensitive and irritated skin. Sometimes, adequate hydration alone can help calm inflammation and soothe red irritated skin.

Maturing Skin

It is especially important for those (like me!) with maturing skin to keep your face adequately moisturized to help with fine lines and wrinkles. As we age, the skin's natural oils decreases, the skin dries out more easily and wrinkles appear deeper. A nourishing oil helps prevent water loss and plump the skin.

The main thing is to make sure that you are using the right kind of moisturizer.

The most nourishing face oils are those made with unrefined, certified organic plant-based oils. Unrefined oils are either cold-pressed or expeller-pressed.

They are minimally processed without chemicals under temperature-controlled conditions which ensures a nutrient-rich, high-quality natural oil.

USDA Certified Organic means the botanical oils are free of synthetic additives, pesticides, and preservatives.

Stay away from petroleum-based products that contain mineral oils that clog your pores and cause breakouts.

Are Chagrin Valley Ingredients & Products USDA Certified Organic?

Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve is a USDA Certified Organic Company

Certified Organic Skin Care

The most important consideration in any business is its customers. Today's world of misleading claims, false advertising, and simple deception, often leaves consumers trying to discover the truth about personal products and their ingredients.

  • We want our customers to know that we are committed to transparency in everything we do.
  • We want our customers to know that when we say "organic," we mean it.
  • We believe that in becoming a USDA Certified Organic company, our customers do not have to wonder if we really use certified organic ingredients or if our organic products are truly organic.
  • So we choose to be a certified organic company and abide by the strict standards required for organic certification.

Some of my favorite products are made with ingredients that just do not exist as certified organic. Why? At this time there are no standards created for ingredients specifically used in the personal care product industry. Organic certification of personal care products is based on the organic food standards set by the National Organic Program of the USDA.

But since we are a certified organic company, we are required to submit documentation that even our "non-organic ingredients" were produced without the use of toxic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), sewage sludge, or irradiation.

Are Your Products and Ingredients Cruelty Free?

All of Chagrin Valley's natural soap, shampoo bars, and personal care products are certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny.

Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve has been Leaping Bunny Certified since 2013.

Natural Organic Skin Care Cruelty-Free Leaping Bunny LogoThe Leaping Bunny Program was developed in 1996, by The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC), to identify and support companies that are doing their part to help eliminate the unnecessary use and mistreatment of animals to test cosmetic products and ingredients. The CCIC is made up of eight animal protection groups including the Humane Society of the U.S., as well as groups from Canada and Europe.

At Chagrin Valley we do not test our finished products on animals (other than human volunteers). But what about the raw materials, the ingredients we use?

Many products display labels claiming that their finished product is ‘not tested on animals’ but this does not guarantee that the product ingredients are actually free from animal testing.

The CCIC Standard is a pledge that a company makes to remove animal testing from all stages of product development. Our pledge to buy ingredients that are cruelty-free is integrated into the purchase agreement for all of our suppliers.

Personal care products displaying the “real” Leaping Bunny logo are certified ‘cruelty-free' using the internationally recognized Humane Cosmetics Standards. These rigorous standards require that no animal testing is performed or authorized for finished products or any of the ingredients in any stage of product development by the company, its laboratories or its suppliers after a fixed cut-off date. All Leaping Bunny companies are subject to independent audits and pledge commitments that are renewed on an annual basis.

This annual renewal is a key requirement that sets the Leaping Bunny Program apart from other cruelty-free certification programs. Companies that manufacture products, as well as their ingredient suppliers, must annually recommit to upholding their promise to not conduct animal testing on any finished products, ingredients, or formulations.

Why is this annual commitment renewal important? "Because product formulations change, suppliers come and go, and manufacturers develop innovative lines to meet consumer needs. But we know that compassionate consumers need to be confident that no animal testing is involved in the products they use."

At Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve . . .

  • we do NOT test our products on animals
  • we do NOT use ingredients tested on animals
  • we do NOT sell into markets that require animal testing

The Leaping Bunny Program provides
the best assurance to consumers
that they are making compassionate shopping choices
by purchasing Cruelty-Free skin care!

Can I Use Your Natural Skincare Products While Pregnant or Nursing?

Natural Organic Skin Care for Babies & InfantsWe often receive questions as to whether our soaps, shampoos, and other natural products are safe to use during pregnancy.

We recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare routine with our organic products, or any other line of products.

Read the label on a bar of commercial soap. Read the label on your jar of moisturizer.

Now read the ingredients in a Chagrin Valley product.

We use quality natural and USDA Certified Organic ingredients. No synthetic additives, colorants, fragrances, preservatives, or chemical derivatives are used.

There is nothing in our all-natural basic soap or other products that could cause a problem in pregnancy.

Topically applying the herbs present in many of our soaps is also not a problem. Your skin will absorb much less herb from the soap than if you would sprinkle them on your food.

Essential Oils

The issue that seems to be of most concern is the use of essential oils during pregnancy.

There is a lot of confusing, ambiguous, and inaccurate information concerning the use of essential oils in pregnancy.

The question of safety and safety testing has a lot to do with several factors.

  • The type and composition of the specific essential oil. Essential oils differ greatly in strength and composition.

  • The quality of the essential oil. Many "cheap essential oils" are not pure and maybe cut with synthetic chemicals.

  • The actual “dose” of herb/essential oils. Most of the clinical research on essential oil safety is based on information for internal (actually ingesting) large doses of herbs, essential oils, or herbal "medicines." Obviously there have been no tests done on pregnant women.

  • How the essential oil is being used. The concentration of essential oils that are absorbed through inhalation, as in aromatherapy, and massage is much lower than if you were actually ingesting the oil.

But also, aromatherapy and massage therapy use much higher concentrations of essential oils than you find in soap or even in eating the herb. With aromatherapy, you are inhaling the high concentrations which get absorbed via the lungs and in massage therapy, the essential oils remain on your skin and are absorbed.

Our scented soaps are gently scented with essential oils, but the choice is between you and your health care professional. The most critical time is the first trimester.

Just about every one of our products, like lip balms, whipped butters, soaps, shampoos, and deodorants has a "no added scent" version.

When there is a growing baby to consider, if you are at all uncertain as to the safety of an essential-oil containing product, or any ingredient, please consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional!

When it comes to safety during pregnancy it is understandable that many massage therapists and aromatherapists decide to err on the side of caution in recommending the avoidance of certain essential oils.

Some Herbalists and Aromatherapist believe that essential oils that are normally safe to use, are safe during pregnancy, while others will recommend avoiding all essential oils during pregnancy.

Some essential oils that are normally quite safe have hormone-like effects and some even stimulate uterine muscles, both of which would be contraindicated during pregnancy.

Please do not ask us if one of our products is safe to use during pregnancy--we will simply refer you to this page.

We do not provide a list of essential oils considered safe during pregnancy because the information available is very contradictory. One aromatherapy source will list an essential oil as problematic while another one states it is fine.

The information is also changing constantly. Please do your own research and consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional for the most up-to-date information.

Sensitive Skin Can Strike During Pregnancy

Even if you have never had sensitive skin in the past, you may notice that a product you have been using for several years now irritates your skin.

The stretching belly is often the most sensitive spot. Other potential problem areas include the hips, thighs, and bottom where the skin may become dry and flaky.

Although the exact cause is not known, raging hormones do make you more sensitive to a wide range of things, and also your skin is thinning and stretching as you, and your baby, grow.

These changes can behave in unpredictable ways. For example, if you have eczema you may suffer from major flare-ups or complete remission during pregnancy.

Keep your body well moisturized and avoid products that contain synthetic additives, colorants, fragrances, or preservatives. Any of these can exacerbate sensitive skin problems.

Before trying a new product, you can always do a patch test to test for sensitivity.

And again, we recommend that expectant and nursing mothers check with their midwife or physician before changing a skincare routine with our products, or any other line of products.

Pregnancy & Children: We do not provide information on the safety of essential oils during Pregnancy or for use in Children because the available information is very ambiguous and often contradictory. If you’re interested in using essential oils during pregnancy or with young children please do your own research and consult your doctor, midwife, or health care professional before use.
